I recently sent you an email stating my amazement concerning your use on National Radio of the term “Italian Grease Ball” I have received no response back. I would appreciate a quick line or two simply stating if you plan to apologize or not. The only other comment I would add to my previous email is that over the years I have found that people who tend to use slurs and profanity (you didn’t use profanity, but they are in the same family) are simply being lazy in thought. I know you are neuron rich, but perhaps a synapse simply didn’t do its intended job when you uttered the slur.

One Voice raps Limbaugh for anti-Italian remarks

ITALIAN AMERICAN ONE VOICE COALTION RAPS LIMBAUGH FOR ANTI-ITALIAN REMARKS

NEW JERSEY/NEW YORK---The Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition, a nationwide coalition of anti-bias activists, is calling on nationally-syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh to apologize for using the slur “Italian greaseball” during a recent broadcast.

Limbaugh used the term in reference to former NJ Governor Jon Corzine, during a broadcast last month, and the transcript, which recently came to light, is posted at:

‘Corzine has curly hair. Corzine's the kind of guy that never has to wash it; you can't tell the difference when he does. He never has to brush it or comb it, you can't tell the difference when he does. That's why this stands out. I mean, he’s got Italian grease ball, whatever, sixteen. He's lathered it on there; he's slicked it back.’ (emphasis added).

Andre’ DiMino, president of ONE VOICE, criticized Limbaugh and wrote a letter demanding an apology.

“With your millions of listeners and prominence in the American political landscape, YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY to do the right thing,” DiMino penned. “Your stereotypical, demeaning and pejorative ‘...Italian Greaseball...’ comment IS CERTAINLY NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO!”

ONE VOICE has activated its network of Defenders and urges others to respond to Limbaugh via email at ElRushbo@eibnet.com or by calling 1-800-282-2882 during Limbaugh’s broadcast hours to express outrage.

“Although we have been barraged with such stereotyping and denigration in the entertainment media, we certainly did not expect to have it hurled upon us by someone in your position,” DiMino wrote to Limbaugh. “Your comment was a disgrace and you should IMMEDIATELY apologize to ALL Italian Americans for your insensitivity and insult!”

“You would not have made such a blatant, demeaning and pejorative comment about any other ethnic or racial group. Mr. Limbaugh, we ask for that same sensitivity,” DiMino noted. “Retract your comment and apologize for making it. That is the right thing to do now!”

ONE VOICE is different from all other Italian American groups in that its sole focus and objective is to fight bias, stereotyping and discrimination against Italian Americans. It is the only national Italian American organization with this singular mandate.

ONE VOICE’s stated mission is to “… secure the rightful representation of Americans of Italian origin and of all peoples whose paths toward social equality have been impeded. The powers of intellect, wisdom and due process of law will be brought to bear on all inequities.”

Palmiotti's wife Amanda Conner, a none New Yorker, came up with the premise. Just once I would like to see a American Italian from NYC portrayed as something other than blue collar or a mobster.

"Conner draws several colorful characters around Vinnie, including his grandfather, his low-life best friend, his hot Russian neighbors and a lot of cats."

6. Comments on the Italian American Video

Hi Manny, hope all is well. Thank you so much for the wonderful and beautiful Italian American video. It was a masterpiece! I am a third generation Italian American. I enjoyed it immensely and it brought back memories of my grandparents, great grandparents, etc. (all of whom are gone now) joyously celebrating the holidays, and in particular, those huge Sunday dinners where the entire family gathered for great food and drink.

Everything depicted in that video I had lived a hundred times over. From attending the 6:30 am Mass every Sunday, then going to my grandparents house, where they would prepare a dinner that took hours to prepare and then in the aftermath, more hours to consume and enjoy. I still yearn for those years, those family members, and am saddened by the fact that Italians today have lost much of that family tradition and culture, because they are too "Americanized."

By the end of the video, I was actually crying, because I not only lived that video, but felt like I knew those people personally because of what we share in our beautiful culture. Thanks Manny, I will be passing the video on to all my Italian friends and family.

An intelligent and accurate portrayal of the Italian American experience (at least my family) for a change... it is more about integrity, passion, art, history, music and family than the false stereotypes Hollywood has created and many Italian Americans have simply accepted as their heritage - and actually consider as "cool" (can only imagine what my Nonno would have to say about such ignorance!). Given the continuous anti-Italian American remarks made on Fox News’

“The Five,” show, I am asking you to please immediately remove your

advertisements from this show and network.

Italian Americans are the seventh largest ethnic group in America, and

a major supporter of your company. Over the past year, Bob Beckel, a

panelist on “The Five,” has made a variety of bigoted attacks on

Italian Americans that has included calling us “greaseballs,” and

“guidos.”

During one such show, Beckel noted “all the garbage men in his area

must be Italian because all the names on the trash trucks end in a

vowel. “ On another occasion, Beckel said “one of the things he

hated about shopping was that he had to fight the crowds of guidos for

parking." On separate occasions, he has labeled Italian Americans as

“greaseballs” and “guidos.”

Neither Beckel—nor Fox News---have acknowledged or addressed numerous

emails and calls from Italian Americans regarding the bigoted remarks.

Their lack of civility and sensitivity is astounding toward Italian

Americans, and this type of hatred should never be tolerated against

any ethnic group.

We are calling upon you to join us in making a statement against

bigotry and racism and to just say NO! To Fox News and “The Five.”

Let me preface my comments by stating that for years we Italian Americans have fought hard to rid ourselves of the negative stereotypes, defamation, and discrimination. But it seems we could never close on many of these issues. In fact many have stated time and time again that the Italian Americans will scream and holler and in a few weeks will lose interest and will simply give up!

We must change that perception. We must recognize that in order to have a strong organization we need funds and a strong membership of activists that will never give up.

The following issues still need to be addressed and resolved:

Letter written to Mr. Seidenberg:

Mr. Seidenberg, I am sure by now that you are fully aware of the hatred directed at Italian Americans by Mr. Bob Beckel of Fox News. Many of us Italian Americans also are aware of the fact that Verizon is one of the major sponsors for Fox News. I would like to see someone finally take the first step and initiative, to sincerely threaten Fox News with a withdrawal of their sponsorship, until this man publicly apologizes for his hateful, racist remarks.

He has made anti semitic remarks, and hateful remarks directed at Asians and because there was no immediate response from anyone, he has gone unpunished and has become even more brazen and hateful. We are targeting many of the companies that sponsor and run advertisements on Fox News but only recieve form letters as a response. Won't you be the first company to seriously address this injustice and help us stop the hatred being spewed by Mr. Beckel.

Christie’s "Jersey-style"

Is Gov. Chris Christie setting a good example for New Jersey students?

He recently said to Iowa voters, "If you don’t do what you’re supposed to do for Mitt Romney on Tuesday, I will be back, Jersey-style, people. I will be back."

He also said, "I hope they have taken me seriously because I will come back here plenty angry if they don’t do the right thing on Tuesday night. So they don’t want that. They’ve seen that. It’s not good." ("Christie goes all Jersey in Iowa," Dec. 31)

If a student on a playground spoke in this manner, it would be viewed as a threat and the student could be expelled.

Most New Jerseyans are hardworking and law-abiding. And yet we have a governor who degrades our citizens by using a negative stereotype.

Gov. Christie, come back to New Jersey and represent the people who have elected you. Do it with the dignity that we deserve.

Wrong impression

Let me ask you, Gov. Christie, what does "Jersey-style" mean? I’ve been a New Jerseyan all my life and have had the opportunity to live and work with many fine Jerseyans.

So to me Jersey-style means planting a garden, home-made cookies, family Thanksgivings, dinner in the kitchen, Scouting, working two jobs to pay for the kids’ college, religion, working and attending state college, remembering when our major cities had class and dignity, hiking, shoveling snow, paying taxes, a beer at the local pub, the Shore and some good politicians.

So, that’s what you were going to share with the citizens of Iowa if they don’t do what you expect? That’s weird.

Why go out to Iowa? Just invite them to visit and experience "Jersey-style"? That might create jobs.

The governor’s behavior is detrimental to the well-being and image of New Jersey. How sad.

ONE VOICE is asking on behalf of Joe Grano that all our members and organization contact the members of the Italian American Delegation to Congress regarding two issues that should be of major interest to the Italian American community and Italophiles:

1) The lack of a congressional resolution honoring Italy on its 150th anniversary as a country, and

2) The lack of a ceremony in the Rotunda this year to present the Congressional Gold Medal to Constantino Brumidi, as required by law..

Is Mr. Grano incorrect in writing that he believes that Italian Americans have little or no clout in the Speaker’s Office?

Would he be incorrect in writing that the Congress of the United States is remiss in not honoring Italy this year?

One Voice is asking that:

1. You call Speaker Boehner’s Office at 202-224-0600 and say that his actions are unfair, and to schedule a ceremony for Brumidi, this year.

2. You should call your Members of Congress and ask them to introduce a resolution now recognizing the 150th anniversary of Italian unity. (The Capitol Switchboard number is 202.224.3121).

3. You should also call your national Italian American organization’s headquarters (NIAF, OSIA, UNICO) and tell them to get behind these two issues.
